UN chief inspector Mohamed El Baradei on Iran's
nuclear arms program
Israel is accusing the UN nuclear weapons watchdog of holding back
incriminating evidence of Iran's drive to obtain nuclear weapons, the
Haaretz newspaper reported.
It cited unnamed officials as saying the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA) was refraining from publishing data obtained in recent months
that indicates Iran is pursing information about weaponization efforts and a
military nuclear program.
IAEA chief Mohamed El Baradei, who is to vacate his post in December, has
said the UN watchdog does not have any evidence suggesting Iran is
developing a nuclear weapons program.
Nov 2009 Update ElBaradei says negotiations between the West and
Tehran over its nuclear program may not happen.
But Haaretz cited officials as saying the new evidence was presented to the IAEA in a classified annex written by its inspectors and said to have been
signed by the head of the inspection team in Iran.
The document was not included in the final report, it said.
British, French, German and US senior officials have recently pressured El
Baradei to publish the information, the newspaper said.
Israel has often criticised El Baradei in the past, accusing him of being
lax towards Iran, and asked in 2007 that he be fired.
A government spokesman declined to comment on the report.
Widely considered to be the Middle East's sole if undeclared nuclear armed
power, Israel, along with Washington suspects Iran of trying to develop
atomic weapons under the guise of a civilian nuclear program, a charge
Tehran denies.
Israel considers the Islamic republic to be its main foe due to repeated
statements by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad calling for the Jewish state to
be "wiped off the map."

UN's Mohamed further delays the condemnation of Iran's
Nuclear Programs
(read the archives from 2003)
Mohamed El Baradei, the head of the UNs nuclear monitor, has turned down a request
by the European Union to issue a far-reaching condemnation of Irans nuclear
program when the agencys board meets in extraordinary session next month.
El Baradeis reports set the tone for the international debate on the issue, so his
decision could weaken US-European efforts for a speedy referral of Iran to the UN Security
Council.
The director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been frustrated
by Irans resumption of nuclear research the move that set off US and European
attempts to send the issue to the Security Council as well as by a slowdown in
Iranian co-operation with his inspectors. He has informed Tehran it has until the end of
next month to give his inspectors improved access to documents and sites.
Only if Iran does not accede would he be ready to declare his investigation was no longer
making progress and that his hands were tied.
Diplomats said leading European governments had asked Mr El Baradei to make an earlier
report, ahead of the February 2-3 meeting of the IAEA board.
ElBaradei has refused because he believes in due process, said an official
close to the agency. He has said that the next report will be for the [regular]
March 6 board and he cant just advance that report.
Iran gets another few months to finalize hiding the nuclear facilities deep underground.
Iran learned from the Iraq debacle. The worthless UNs El Baradei gave Saddham advance
notice of where they would explore.
