5-10-07 News Update - FDA and USDA investigates Risk to Humans from Food Containing Melamine
Currently, swine and poultry on farms suspected of receiving contaminated feed are being held under state quarantine or voluntarily by the owners. The FDA import alert for these products sourced from China remains in effect and U.S. Customs and Border Protection will continue laboratory testing of the products as they enter the U.S.
How did melamine get from pet food to human food?
FDA and USDA say - There is a low risk to human health from consuming meat from hogs and chickens known to have been fed animal feed supplemented with pet food scraps that contained melamine and melamine-related compounds, according to an assessment conducted by scientists from five federal agencies. When scientists assumed that all the solid food a person consumes in an entire day was contaminated with melamine at the levels observed in animals fed contaminated feed, it was well below any level of public health concern. The risk assessment and federal joint investigation into imported wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate from China that contained melamine and melamine-related compounds continues. http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2007/NEW01629.html

What is Melamine?
Melamine is a chemical substance used to produce durable, heat-resistant plastic for building materials, fire-retardant fabrics and kitchenware. Melamine is not approved for use in pet food or human food and should not be present in wheat gluten or any other food ingredient. An Incident of Contaminated Wheat Gluten- On March 30 the FDA announced discovery of wheat gluten contaminated with melamine from a single supply source. The contaminated wheat gluten represents less than half of 1% of all the wheat gluten used in human and pet foods in the U.S. during the past year. The majority of the contaminated ingredient was supplied to Menu Foods, though it was distributed to other pet food manufacturers, as well. It is suspected that the melamine contamination may have been caused by tampering.

In recent years, China’s food safety scandals have involved everything from fake baby milk formulas and soy sauce made from human hair to instances where cuttlefish were soaked in calligraphy ink to improve their color and eels were fed contraceptive pills to make them grow long and slim. “They have fewer people inspecting product at the ports than ever before,” says Caroline Smith DeWaal, the director of food safety for the Center for Science in the Public Interest in Washington. “Until China gets programs in place to verify the safety of their products, they need to be inspected by U.S. inspectors. This open-door policy on food ingredients is an open invitation for an attack on the food supply, either intentional or unintentional.”

April-26-07 News -
China's Foreign Ministry said there was no evidence to support the FDA's claim that (melamine) a chemical found in plastics and pesticides, is to blame for dozens of pet deaths in North America. They said they would cooperate with the United States to find out what actually killed the animals. An investigation found melamine in wheat and rice gluten exported to the United States by two Chinese companies. Meanwhile, officials in North Carolina say melamine has been found in all the hogs tested at a farm in western North Carolina. Chinese farmers have a history of using human waste, contaminated irrigation systems and powerful pesticides banned in the United States.

It's been three weeks since a major pet food recall was announced, but more pets keep getting sick, and pet owners are still worried. Based on an extrapolation from data released April 10th by one of the largest chains of veterinary U.S. hospitals, pet food contaminated with the industrial chemical may have sickened or killed 39,000 cats and dogs across the U.S. Now, certain dry pet foods and dog biscuits from different companies than Menu Foods have been added to the list as well, and with more tainted foods, comes more sick animals. Checking the lists of bad foods is extremely important, so click on the link below for a list of the recalled pet foods from the F.D.A.

April 6-2007 News
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has identified a Chinese company in the eastern city of Xuzhou as the supplier of the tainted gluten. The FDA last week blocked wheat gluten imports from Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co., saying they contained melamine, a chemical found in plastics and pesticides. Melamine is used to make plastic kitchenware, glues, countertops, fabrics, fertilizers and flame retardants. It also is both a contaminant and byproduct of several pesticides, including cyromazine, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Las Vegas-based ChemNutra Inc., which imported the wheat gluten and shipped it to companies that make pet food, said that Xuzhou Anying had never reported the presence of melamine in the content analysis it provided.

Xuzhou Anying produces and exports more than 10,000 tons of wheat gluten a year, according to its Web site. But only 873 tons were linked to tainted U.S. pet food, raising the possibility that more of the contaminated product could still be on the market in China, or abroad.

For the first time ...a Chinese official said the government is investigating the issue. Xia Wenjun, an administration official, was cited by the state-run Xinhua News Agency as saying "sampling and examination" of wheat gluten were under way nationwide but did not elaborate.

Wheat Gluten is also found in Human Foods....

Wheat gluten, a source of vegetable protein, is also used in some human foods, but the FDA said it had found no indication that the contaminated ingredient had been used in food for people.....
Some of the chemicals used in pet food include:
BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) - known to cause liver and kidney dysfunction
BHT (butylated hydroxytolulene) - known to cause liver and kidney dysfunction
Ethoxyquin - suspected of causing cancer
Propylene glycol - causes the destruction of red blood cells

March 30, 2007 News
The Food and Drug Administration found a chemical used to make plastics in the recalled Menu Foods Pet Food.
The FDA said it found melamine in samples of the Menu Foods pet food, as well as in wheat gluten used as an ingredient. Cornell University scientists also have found the chemical, also used as a fertilizer, in the urine of sick cats, as well as in the kidney of one cat that died after eating the company's wet food.

The FDA said it would alert the public quickly if the melamine was found in any foods other than the recalled pet food. About 70 percent of the wheat gluten used in the United States for human and pet food is imported from the European Union and Asia, according to the Pet Food Institute. Menu Foods used wheat gluten to thicken the gravy of its "cuts and gravy" style wet pet foods, FDA officials have said. When you get an ingredient from a supplier from around the globe, they differ in regulation, oversight and quality compared to strict U.S. guidelines. The FDA said they may change how it regulates the pet food industry.

3-29- The Cornell Animal Health Diagnostic Center states they are unable to confirm the findings (aminopterin) of the New York State Lab. The toxic agent or agents in the recalled food remains uncertain and pet owners are advised to report all suspected food-related illness or adverse effects to their pets' vets, the
FDA and Pet Connection, including pets whose symptoms are not consistent with aminopterin poisoning.)

3-29- Why has Menu Foods refused to identify the supplier of the allegedly tainted wheat gluten? Why won't Menu Foods disclose all of the companies / brands which contract with Menu Foods, including those not on the official recall list? Why did Menu Foods ignore the complaints as far back as December 2006... and were so slow in initiating the recall?

3-23 RAT POISON (aminopterin) - China supplied the wheat gluten...they sprayed the containers and supplies with rat poison to "protect" it from rats . It is NOT illegal in China or Mexico or other turd countries to use DDT and other toxins on or around food supplies. Toxic chemicals are illegal to use by farmers in the U.S. but...no matter....the Bush Administration, Republicans and DemocRats enjoy large campaign donations from the lobby groups. We strongly ask you to notify your state representative to ban the import of toxic products and use U.S. sources.

Rat poison has been found in pet food blamed for the deaths of at least 16 cats and dogs, a spokeswoman for the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets said Friday. The toxin was identified as aminopterin, state Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker said in a statement. Aminopterin is used to kill rats in some countries, but it's not registered for that use in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The officials did not say how they believe it got into the pet food. The substance was found at a level of at least 40 parts per million in tested cat food samples, according to Donald Smith, dean of Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Testing was done at the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell and at the New York State Food Laboratory. "Any amount of this product is too much in food," Hooker said. The lab tested three cat food samples provided by Menu Foods, the manufacturer that produced all the recalled food. Aminopterin was found in two samples. The lab has not tested any dog food. Hooker said the lab would be testing individual components of the pet food. Aminopterin, also used as a cancer drug, is highly toxic in high doses. It inhibits the growth of malignant cells and suppresses the immune system. The Food and Drug Administration has said the investigation was focusing on wheat gluten in the food. Wheat gluten itself would not cause kidney failure, but the common ingredient could have been contaminated by heavy metals or mold toxins, the FDA said. State and FBI officials said they knew of no criminal investigations in the case.

3-22 Numerous quotes from the company and even Vets are saying, "There’s just no conclusive evidence of what the contaminating agent is right now." We disagree with the foot dragging. They know the suspected products.... they have the product id's...they have test equipment...they are fools or fraudulent.

UDPATE March 21- The FDA said the investigation was focused on problems with wheat gluten, which the manufacturer said had been coming from a new supplier. Neither the FDA nor Menu Foods would identify the supplier or that company's other customers, saying the ingredient had not been confirmed as the source of the problem. The FDA said, "That supplier does not provide ingredients for makers of human food."

March 18 -The recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier
, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein. The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between December 3 and March 6 throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman Julie Zawisza said it is still too early to determine what could have affected the food. Zawisza added that even if wheat gluten is the source, “it doesn’t necessarily mean the wheat gluten per se. It could be another substance associated with the wheat gluten.”

Things to look for on the label are the first three ingredients. These first three make up 75% of the contents of the food you are feeding. The first three items listed are usually easy to read and easy to understand

NOTE - Meat By Products News Source ingredients included in commercial pet foods.
The official definition for meat by-products by the Association Of American Feed Control Officials, Inc. (AAFCO) is:
"The non-rendered, clean parts, other than meat, derived from slaughtered mammals. It includes, but is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood, bone, partially defatted low temperature fatty tissue, and stomachs and intestines freed of their contents. It does not include hair, horns, teeth and hoofs. It shall be suitable for use in animal food."

In many cases, by-product meals are derived from "4-D" meat sources - defined as food animals that have been rejected for human consumption because they were presented to the meat packing plant as "Dead, Dying, Diseased or Disabled." The quality of animal meat by-products also tends to be very inconsistent between batches.

Meat by-products are commonly found in lower-grade pet foods and even many of the larger name brands, including Science Diet (even their prescription diet product line), Purina (both Purina One and Purina Pro Plan), and Iams / Eukanuba. Ingredients listed as "meat, beef, chicken, and/or poultry by-products" on pet food labels are not required to include actual meat, and "rendered meat" on labels can refer to any rendered mammal meat, including dogs and cats.

Someone wrote- We've been using Pet Foods, Peanut Butter, Spinach and other recalled items for years with no problems. So.. why the sudden problem? Check out the toilet facilities in the thousand acre fields that Illegal Aliens and others work in. You will not find porta potties. They are usually paid by the bushel or basket so do you think they will walk two miles to relieve themselves and lose time and money? It could be that simple and that horrific. An investigation of companies using illegal aliens just might explain some of the "crappy food supplies." You can make an anonymous report

Mexican comedian Goerge Lopez actually alluded to that on his HBO special 'Americas Mexican.' Lopez said "you wanna fuck with us? Who do you think picks your lettuce, etc?" Why do you think there was an e-coli outbreak?" Then he mimics wiping his ass. He even said 'you think this is your country?' "Not ANYMORE" and starting dancing to mexican music!

March 14, 2007- Menu Foods recalls 60 million containers of wet cat and dog pet food after reports of kidney failure and deaths. Menu Foods said, "we have failed to indentify any issues with the products in question." "We discovered that timing of the production associated with these complaints, coincides with the introduction of an INGREDIENT FROM A NEW SUPPLIER." "We stopped using that ingredient .... and production since then has been undertaken using INGREDIENTS from another source.

BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) - known to cause liver and kidney dysfunction
BHT (butylated hydroxytolulene) - known to cause liver and kidney dysfunction

Who regulates the pet food industry? The answer is:
PFI – The Pet Food Institute
AAFCO – Association of American Feed Control Officials
FDA/CVM – The Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine
These agencies profess standards and measures for dog food manufacturers to uphold, but they DO NOT have the authority to enforce them. Therefore, there are no assurances of the quality of ingredients that the major dog food manufacturers are putting into their bad dog food.

Some web sites that inform you of ethoxyquin are below, including the FDA report.

There are a number of foods that are toxic to cats. You may have forgotten that the gravy slathered over your Thanksgiving turkey used broth that was flavored with onion, among other things. Onions are very toxic to cats. The following is a list of foods that cats should never eat: Onions, Garlic & Related Root Vegetables Tomatoes, Green (raw Potatoes) Milk
Although milk is not toxic to cats, it may have adverse effects. Adult cats fed a nutritious diet don't need milk, and many cats are lactose-intolerant, which means that the lactose in milk and milk products produces stomach upset, cramps. a small amount of cream may be okay

Pet Poisoning is Not New - May 10, 2006 - COLUMBIA, S.C. - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that at least 76 dogs nationwide are believed to have died as a result of eating contaminated Diamond Pet Foods. The company has recalled 19 varieties of dog and cat food because tests showed high levels of aflatoxin, a naturally occurring toxic chemical that comes from a fungus found on corn and other grains that causes severe liver damage in animals.
