CUBAN TORTURER FOUND GUILTY IN MIAMI FEDERAL COURT

(Miami, FL) Judicial Watch strongly supports a federal jury’s guilty verdict of Eriberto Mederos, a torturer for Dictator Fidel Castro who lied to the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service to obtain citizenship. Fidel Castro Himself Must Still Be Held Accountable For His “Crimes Against Humanity”

Mederos entered the United States in 1984 on an immigrant’s visa and obtained U.S. citizenship in 1993. He was charged with giving false testimony to the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service about his past in Cuba.

During the six-day trial in Federal Court in Miami, sixteen witnesses testified that Mederos tortured them at a Havana psychiatric hospital between 1968 and 1978 simply because they expressed disapproval of Fidel Castro’s communist government. Judicial Watch represents several of the victims in a criminal case against Castro before the Belgian Royal Courts for “crimes against humanity.” Mederos’ victims gave compelling testimony of how he used electro-shock treatments and insulin shots to torture victims with no record of psychiatric illness, in order to carry out Castro’s totalitarian program of repression.

Among those who gave gripping testimony that left the jury in tears was Belkis Ferro, who was only 15 years old when Mederos tortured her with electro-shock treatments and insulin shots. Belkis was deemed a “rebellious teenager” and was punished for denouncing Castro’s oppressive regime at school.

“We are elated by the jury’s decision to convict this brutal torturer. His victims can finally realize some measure of justice for the crimes committed against them. Unfortunately, Fidel Castro, the man who is directly responsible for these atrocities, is still free to continue his reign of terror. The Bush administration’s plans to continue trade sanctions is not enough; Castro must be indicted in the United States, and tried for the despot and terrorist that he is,” stated Judicial Watch Chairman and General Counsel Larry Klayman.
