Washington spending is out of control and government is too big-they want to
cap it - Obama says no. The American people want a balanced budget amendment
- Obama says no.
Elected Officials have spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars
supplying their offices and staff with popcorn machines, plasma televisions,
DVD equipment, ionic air fresheners, camcorders, and signature machines. Yet
some can’t find items to cut?
BELOW IS ONLY A SMALL SAMPLING OF GOVERNMENT WASTE
The Congressional Budget Office published a "Budget Options" series
identifying more than $100 billion in potential spending cuts.
Examples from multiple Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports of
wasteful duplication include 342 economic development programs; 130 programs
serving the disabled; 130 programs serving at-risk youth; 90 early childhood
development programs; 75 programs funding international education, cultural,
and training exchange activities; and 72 safe water programs.
Government auditors spent the past five years examining all federal programs
and found that 22 percent of them costing taxpayers a total of $123
billion annually fail to show any positive impact on the populations they
serve.
Washington spends $92 billion on corporate welfare (excluding TARP) versus
$71 billion on homeland security.
The federal government made at least $72 billion in improper payments in
2008.
Washington spends $25 billion annually maintaining unused or vacant federal
properties.
According to Taxpayers for Common Sense, appropriations bills in fiscal
2010 contained 9,499 congressional earmarks worth $15.9 billion
More than $13 billion in Iraq aid has been classified as wasted or stolen.
Another $7.8 billion cannot be accounted for.
In 2009 the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found “staggering” cost
overruns of almost $300 billion in nearly 70 percent of the Pentagon’s 96
major weapons. What’s more, the programs were running, on average, 21 months
behind schedule. And when they were completed, they provided less than they
promised.
The government has spent $3 billion to re-sand our nation’s beaches.
Advocates claim this prevents erosion and keeps the beaches attractive to
tourists. But the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the
sand does nothing to prevent erosion and this sand gets swept out to sea
just as easily as existing sand.
Congress has ignored efficiency recommendations from the Department of
Health and Human Services that would save $9 billion annually. Members of
Congress are set to pay themselves $90 million to increase their franked
mailings for the 2010 election year.
Taxpayers are funding paintings of high-ranking government officials at a
cost of up to $50,000 apiece.
Congress recently spent $2.4 billion on 10 new jets that the Pentagon
insists it does not need and will not use. Audits showed $34 billion worth
of Department of Homeland Security contracts contained significant waste,
fraud, and abuse.
The Securities and Exchange Commission spent $3.9 million rearranging desks
and offices at its Washington, D.C., headquarters.
Washington recently spent $1.8 million to help build a private golf course
in Atlanta, Georgia
The Defense Logistics Agency had no use for parts worth more than half of
the $13.7 billion in equipment stacked up in DOD warehouses in 2006 to 2008.
Washington will spend $126 million in 2009 to enhance the Kennedy family
legacy in Massachusetts. Additionally, Senator John Kerry (D-MA) diverted
$20 million from the 2010 defense budget to subsidize a new Edward M.
Kennedy Institute.
Federal investigators have launched more than 20 criminal fraud
investigations related to the TARP financial bailout.
Despite trillion-dollar deficits, last year's 10,160 earmarks included
$200,000 for a tattoo removal program in Mission Hills, California; $190,000
for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming; and $75,000 for the
Totally Teen Zone in Albany, Georgia.
The Federal Communications Commission spent $350,000 to sponsor NASCAR
driver David Gilliland.
Fraud related to Hurricane Katrina spending is estimated to top $2 billion.
In addition, debit cards provided to hurricane victims were used to pay for
Caribbean vacations, NFL tickets, champagne, "Girls Gone Wild" videos, and
at least one sex change operation.
Auditors discovered that 900,000 of the 2.5 million recipients of emergency
Katrina assistance provided false names, addresses, or Social Security
numbers or submitted multiple applications.
Congress recently gave Alaska Airlines $500,000 to paint a Chinook salmon on
a Boeing 737
The state of Washington sent $1 food stamp checks to 250,000 households in
order to raise state caseload figures and trigger $43 million in additional
federal funds.
Suburban families are receiving large farm subsidies for the grass in their
backyards. These are subsidies that many of these families never requested
and do not want.
The National Institutes of Health spends $1.3 million per month to rent a
lab that it cannot use.
The federal government owns more than 50,000 vacant homes.
$28 million a year just to print "The Congressional Record," which is
available online.
Restoration of Fort Jefferson at Dry Tortugas National Park. “Located 70
miles off shore, the park is almost entirely underwater and accessible only
by airplane, private boat or ferry. The park will get over $13Milllion in
repairs for its main above-water attraction.
The Census Bureau blew $2.5 million on a 30-second ad that ran during
the Super Bowl.
Washington is spending $2.6 million training Chinese prostitutes to drink
more responsibly on the job. This is the kind of wasteful spending that
President Obama and Congress have stubbornly refused to cut.
Federal employees cost taxpayers $146 million each year when they upgrade to
business class flights. The Government Accountability Office found that more
than half of these upgrades were not properly authorized.
$2 million given to the California Academy of Sciences to send researchers
to islands in the Indian Ocean and to east Africa to capture, photograph and
analyze thousands of exotic ants.
The Department of Agriculture awarded the University of New Hampshire
$700,000 this year investigating methane gas emissions from dairy cows.
The National Science Foundation spent $216,000 to study the use of
"ambiguous" statements by politicians.
A North Carolina project spent $294,958 for “reducing menopausal
hot flashes through yoga.”
Florida International University received nearly $60,000 to document and
provide statistical analysis regarding the rise of colonial lawsuits in the
Spanish Empire.
A woman whose mummified remains were found earlier this year was receiving
Social Security benefits. She was last seen alive in 1994.
Social Security Fraud
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) said, "Every aspect of life in America today is
worse than it was when President Obama took over. Unemployment higher.
Interest rates. The only thing that has gone down in America over the last
two years is the value of your home.
Speaker John Boehner said "This president has been incompetent in
his management of this economy."
"Lenin thought that a nation could only grow more
prosperous when a nation is controlled by a vanguard and elite – a people
who know better than you what to do with your property," he explained. "The
Leninist elite would lead people to a world free of pain and poverty. There
would be no more haves and have-nots or private property. Just boundless
