Oscar Biscet, Human Rights Activist in Cuba and Ex-Prisoner of Conscience - Chronology of
Events Dr. Biscet is presently held at the Combinado del Este Prison in Havana in a cell block with 30 common criminals and has been assigned case # 244 of 2002, file 2903007. He is formally accused of disorderly conduct. Dr. Biscet has been unable to receive medical assistance for a severe gum infection which caused the loss of all his molars during his three year imprisonment. The family dentist who was supposed to treat him after serving his three year sentence received threats and was prevented from rendering his services. Dr. Biscet is in danger of loosing the rest of his teeth if he is not promptly and adequately treated by a specialist. Thursday, October 31, 2002 - Released as an ex-prisoner of conscience from Holguin Prison after serving a three year sentence of so called crimes of "dishonoring nationals symbols", "public disorder", and "inciting delinquent behavior." November 6, 2002 - Holds a press conferencein Havana to denounce the cruel and inhumane treatment Cuban prisoners suffer in the island. Announced a campaign to collect signatures to be sent to human rights organizations world wide, calling for an immediate inspection of prison conditions in Cuba. Friday, December 6 - Arrested with 16 fellow human rights activist for carrying out a peaceful protest when the police prevented the group from meeting at a house in the neighborhood of Lawton in Havana to discuss human rights. The peaceful protesters were beaten and violently arrested as they staged an act of nonviolent civil desobedience sitting down and crying out "long live human rights!" and "freedom for political prisoners". Dr. Biscet has not received adequate medical treatment for an injury, result of this arrest. At the Tenth Police Precinct Dr. Biscet had to share his cell with 5 delinquents and sleep on the floor ( Dec.6-23, 2002) Three other activists who remained arrested at the Tenth Police Precinct in Acosta Avenue in Havana with Dr. Biscet where also relocated to different prisons: Virgilio Marante was transferred to the 1580 Prison, Orlando Zapata Tamayo to Guanajay Prison while Raśl Arencibia Fajardo was sent to the Prison of Valle Grande. Since his release October 31, 2002, Dr. Biscet, was promoting in the island a civic project called "Friends of Human Rights" whereby small groups of civilians meet in homes to learn what their human rights are and ways to defend and demand them peacefully. Friday, December 20, 2002 - Whereabouts of Dr. Biscet are unknown as his wife and mother search for him at three detention centers when they are told by Cuban authorities that he was transferred. Monday, December 23, 2002 - Dr. Biscet is officially transferred to Combinado del Este Prison. Tuesday, December 24, 2002 - Family members are allowed to visit Dr. Biscet at the Combinado del Este Prison for the first time. Friday, December 27, 2002 - Dr. Biscet is formally accused of disorderly conduct and assigned a file and case number. Thursday, January 9, 2003 - Second family visit to Dr. Biscet at the Combinado del Este Prison.
