Criminal Immigrants rounded up for deportation

Federal agents say they have arrested close to 600 immigrants with criminal
records during a three-day immigration enforcement sweep across the
Southeast. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said their
agency targeted foreign nationals convicted of crimes from murder to
assault. They said the immigrants have already served their sentences and
authorities will now seek to deport them.
"As a result of the operation, communities around the Southeast are safer
than they were before," said Felicia Skinner, an ICE field director.
The operation involved hundreds of federal and local law enforcement
officers who focused on convicted criminals in the South East including
Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee.
Authorities say they didn't profile or single out a specific nationality.
Those that were arrested came from over 40 nations including Latin America,
Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. They will likely face immediate
deportation or a hearing. About a dozen of those arrested could face up to
20 years in prison if convicted of felony re-entry.
The people arrested had been convicted of a broad array of charges. Three of
them were convicted murderers, 25 were sex offenders, over 140 were
convicted of assault and more than 200 were convicted on drug charges.
Authorities say they targeted convicted criminals because they are the most
likely to re-offend.
