(Washington, DC) State Department Confirms Saddam Husseins
Government Served With Lawsuit Alleging September 11 Involvement. Judicial Watch, the
public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced
that the governments of Iraq and Afghanistan have been served with a civil lawsuit. The
lawsuit was filed in December, 2001 on behalf of a victim, who wishes to remain anonymous
for security reasons, against the government of Iraq, Osama bin Laden, Al Qaeda, the
government of Afghanistan, and the Taliban for the murder of his wife, who was killed at
the Trade Center on September 11. The lawsuit seeks damages under, among other causes of
action, the Anti-Terrorism Act and the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, which exempts
Iraq and Afghanistan from sovereign immunity for terrorist activity.
The lawsuit alleges a conspiracy among Iraq, bin Laden, the Taliban/Afghani government in
the September 11 terrorist attacks on America. The lawsuit alleges that Iraq provided
material support and assistance to bin Ladens network to carry out the
September 11 attacks and that Iraqi intelligence met several times with September 11
terrorists, in addition to providing training for bin Ladens terrorist network in
Iraq itself.
The State Department confirmed in an August 7 letter to Judicial Watch that Iraq was
served with the lawsuit through the Polish Embassy in Baghdad. According to the State
Department, Iraq was served on June 17 and Afghanistan was served on July 31.
Iraq will now have to respond within 60
days in an American court to its victims of murder and terror. If, as expected it does not
respond by August 17, the Iraqi government will be in default. Judicial Watch will move
for a default judgement and will seek to collect damages from frozen assets and other
sources. In doing so, Judicial Watch will be able to investigate terrorist money
laundering in the United States. While America waits for policy-makers to debate what to
do about Iraq, Judicial Watch will pursue its assets in court on behalf of the victims of
its September 11 terrorist attack, stated Judicial Watch Chairman and General
Counsel Larry Klayman.
