Pakistani-American tied to a homemade car
bomb in New York City's Times Square
News Update 5-9 - Faisal Shahzad, told American investigators that he
received training in North Waziristan, the main base for the Pakistani
Taliban, Al Qaeda and other militant groups. Pakistani officials, already
alarmed by the increase in American drone aircraft attacks against militants
in northwestern Pakistan, have been extremely sensitive about any hint that
American ground troops could become involved in the fight. Attempts by the
United States to increase the presence of Special Operations forces there
even in an advisory or training role have been met with great resistance by
the Pakistanis.
The American military commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal,
met with the Pakistani military chief, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and urged
Pakistan to move more quickly in beginning a military offensive against the
Pakistani Taliban and Al Qaeda in North Waziristan
News update May 7th - A federal law enforcement
official said Shahzad had listened to speeches by radical Islamic clerics in
the years since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Here and abroad, a key focus was the money trail. Shahzad brought $80,000 in
cash into the United States when he returned from trips overseas between
1999 and 2008, and is thought to have had additional sources of funds.
FBI investigators landed in Islamabad, where the FBI has a legal attache
office that works with Pakistani law enforcement and intelligence officers
to focus on whether foreign terrorist money helped finance the operation.
Pakistani cooperation is considered crucial in nailing down the radical ties
of Faisal Shahzad, the U.S. citizen charged in the attempted bombing.
Inside the United States, investigators were interviewing people who might
have ties to Shahzad, but "no one is subject to imminent arrest," said a
senior U.S. law enforcement official, who spoke on the condition of
anonymity because the probe is still unfolding.

May 1, 2010 - A crude car bomb of propane, gasoline
and igniters was discovered in a smoking Nissan Pathfinder in the heart of
Times Square on Saturday evening May 1st, prompting the evacuation of
thousands of tourists and theatergoers in midtown Manhattan. A T-shirt
vendor on the sidewalk saw smoke coming out of vents near the back seat of
the S.U.V., which was parked awkwardly at the curb with its engine running
and its hazard lights on. The vendor notified a police officer and the area
was evacuated and the search began for the owner of the vehicle and any
other clues.
Two days later - Faisal Shahzad was on board a Dubai-bound flight
at Kennedy Airport when FBI agents and New York Police Department detectives
took him into custody.
"The question is is he working with people over seas or is there just a
connection to overseas?" said Rep. King, R-Long Island. "It's definite that
the authorities believe that there is an overseas involvement, generally a
potential overseas involvement, and it involves the Middle East."
Despite becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen on April 17, 2009, Shahzad spent
much of the past year outside of the country, mostly in Pakistan where his
wife, Huma Mian, was currently living. Details of his activities abroad
remain unclear, but a picture of his life in American began to emerge.
Shahzad, along with his wife and children, a boy and a girl, lived for about
three years in a two-story Colonial-style three-bedroom home in Shelton,
Conn., former neighbors said.
Neighbors offered diverging descriptions of Shahzad but agreed that he kept
to himself.
He became a citizen in Hartford, Conn., and passed all the criminal and
national security background checks required for citizenship, officials
said.
The officials familiar with the inquiry say investigators plan to go through
his citizenship application line by line to see if he lied about anything.
Court records show that the suspect in the failed Times Square bombing
defaulted on a $200,000 mortgage on his Connecticut home and that the
property is in foreclosure. Records obtained by The Associated Press show
that Chase Home Finance LLC sued Shahzad in September to foreclose on the
home in Shelton. The foreclosure records show Shahzad took out the mortgage
on the property in 2004, and he co-owned the home with a woman named Huma
Mian. The foreclosure case is pending in Milford Superior Court.
On June 2, 2009, Shahzad departed the U.S. for Dubai in the United Arab
Emirates. In July, he reportedly traveled to Pakistan and is believed to
have visited Peshawar, a city known as a gateway to the militant-occupied
tribal regions of the country, according to MSNBC.
Shahzad last entered the U.S. on Feb. 3, 2010 after a five-month visit to
Pakistan. According to authorities he purchased the Nissan Pathfinder used
in the attempted bombing three weeks ago for $1,300. He responded to a
Craigslist ad and paid for the vehicle in cash.
More than a dozen people with American citizenship or residency, like
Shahzad, have been accused in the past two years of supporting or carrying
out terrorism attempts on U.S. soil, cases that illustrate the threat of
violent extremism from within the U.S.
Among them are Army Maj. Nidal Hasan, a U.S.-born Army psychiatrist of
Palestinian descent, charged with fatally shooting 13 people last year at
Fort Hood, Texas; Najibullah Zazi, a Denver-area airport shuttle driver who
pleaded guilty in February in a plot to bomb New York subways; and a
Pennsylvania woman who authorities say became radicalized online as "Jihad
Jane" and plotted to kill a Swedish artist whose work offended Muslims.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg
initially said the Times Square car bomber was likely “homegrown and could
have been placed by somebody with a political agenda who doesn't like the
health care bill or something.” The first thing Bloomberg thinks of are
those who don't like ObamaCare, presumably conservatives or Tea Party
activists.

MSNBC's Contessa Brewer offered yet more misguided liberal pontifications.
She said, "there are a lot of people who want to use this terrorist intent
to justify writing off people who believe in a certain way or come from
certain countries or whose skin color is a certain way.
