Obama says police acted stupidly
Barack Obama said that police acted "stupidly"
in the arrest of prominent black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. and that
despite racial progress blacks and Hispanics are still singled out unfairly
for arrest.
Obama answered a question about the Gates incident at his July 23rd news
conference on health care, Barack said, "Henry Gates is a friend and I
don't know all the facts of the case. Nonetheless, Obama said, anyone
would have been angry if treated the way Gates claims police in Cambridge,
Mass., treated him. Gates claims he was arrested in his own home after
showing ID to police who responded to a report of a possible burglary.
Gates' arrest followed a report of a possible burglary. A neighbor
apparently saw Gates force the front door and called in a police report.
Police came, and demanded that Gates showed identification. Gates was
arrested shortly afterward for disorderly conduct, a charge that was dropped
Tuesday.
Police say Gates yelled at the officers and initially refused to show his
ID. Gates allegedly yelled “this is what happens to a black man in America”
and “you don’t know who you’re messing with” before he was arrested, and
police said he was uncooperative.

The (white) Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley criticized by President Barack Obama
for arresting black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. in his Massachusetts home
is a police academy expert on racial profiling.
Bill Cosby suggested that President Obama spoke too soon on the
controversial arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates.
“I’ve heard about five different reports [on the details of the arrest],”
Cosby said on Boston’s WZLX. “If I’m the president of the United States, I
don’t care how much pressure people want to put on it about race, I’m
keeping my mouth shut.”
“I was shocked to hear the president making this kind of statement,” Cosby
said referring to the president’s remarks during last night’s press
conference.
