Cleric demands prosecution for profane and disgusting
religious cartoons
There were no riots in the streets, embassies attacked or beheadings threatened during a
recent protest over a sacrilegious cartoon in New Zealand. But one top cleric is calling
for those responsible to be prosecuted.
Why the muted reaction down under? Because the cartoon in question didn't satirize
Mohammed, but offered instead a parody involving the Virgin Mary and the Pope too
disgusting to be described here.
Auckland priest Dr. Denzil Mueli asked police on Saturday to prosecute New Zealand TV
channel C4 for blasphemy over its decision to screen a recent "South Park"
episode titled "Bloody Mary."
Dr. Mueli argues that the Comedy Central production met the dictionary definition of
blasphemy as "profane or sacrilegious talk about God or sacred things."
Previously, the countrys bishops issued a statement calling the episodes
depiction of Mary "derisive, outrageous and beyond all acceptable standards of
decency and good taste.
But aside from the outraged clerics, there wasn't much reaction.
The February 22nd broadcast did prompt "hundreds" to attend a protest prayer
vigil in Auckland the next night. But outraged Christians failed to match the enthusiasm
of their Musilm brothers, whose global rioting in honor of Mohammed killed dozens.
In fact, when "Bloody Mary" was aired in the U.S. in December, there was hardly
a peep of protest.
Even the Catholic League sounded resigned when it demanded an apology from comedy network,
with spokeswoman Kiera McCaffrey explaining: "We realize appealing to Comedy Central
on a moral basis isn't going to get us anywhere."
Where were the editorialists who warned in droves a few weeks later that Mohammed
cartoonists had crossed the line? Mostly out to lunch. Only the Boston Herald bothered to
take note of League's complaint.
The New York Times, on the other hand, actually spotlighted the broadcast in its
"What's on Tonight" column.
