Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Takes Lobby Money to
Deny Public Welfare
Harry Reid Helps Milk Lobby Crush Innovator
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid helped torpedo the efforts of a
maverick dairyman to slash the price consumers pay for milk. Dutch-born
dairyman Hein Hettinga began bottling his own milk in Arizona and selling it
for as much as 20 cents a gallon less than competitors operating under the
government's price-control system. The milk lobby spent millions of dollars
on lobbying and campaign contributions and enlisted the aid of
lawmakers, including Nevada Democrat Reid. In March, Congress passed a law
that basically ended Hettinga's efforts.
Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid wrote at least four letters helpful to
Indian tribes represented by Jack Abramoff, and the senator's staff
regularly had contact with the disgraced lobbyist's team about legislation
affecting other clients. The activities detailed in billing records and
correspondence obtained by The Associated Press are far more extensive than
previously disclosed. They occurred over three years as Reid collected
nearly $68,000 in donations from Abramoff's firm, lobbying partners
and clients.
Reid Said He Saw No Problem With His Sons Lobbying His Staffers Until The
Los Angeles Times Started Asking Questions
Harry Reid is in a class by himself. One of his sons and his son-in-law
lobby in Washington for companies, trade groups and municipalities seeking
Reid’s help in the Senate. A second son has lobbied in Nevada for some of
those same interests, and a third has represented a couple of them as a
litigator. In the last four years alone, their firms have collected more
than $2 million in lobbying fees from special interests that were
represented by the kids and helped by the senator in Washington. So
pervasive are the ties among Reid, members of his family and Nevada’s
leading industries and institutions that it’s difficult to find a
significant field in which such a relationship does not exist.” Harry
Reid’s Sons And Its Clients Identified By The Los Angeles Times Contributed
Over $150,000 To Reid’s Leadership PAC In Soft Money
The Washington Post has some harsh words for the Senate Minority Leader:
THE BEST CASE for Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) is that he
was sloppy about financial disclosure rules in accounting for a real estate
deal on which he made a $700,000 profit. The more unattractive case
is that the senator’s inaccurate description of the investment was an effort
to disguise his partnership with a Las Vegas lawyer who’s never been charged
with wrongdoing but whose name has surfaced in federal investigations
involving organized crime, casinos and political bribery since the 1980s. As
of now, the evidence points toward sloppiness; Mr. Reid’s friendship with
Jay Brown isn’t exactly a secret in the state. But either way, an Associated
Press report about Mr. Reid’s dealings doesn’t cast the senator in an
attractive light. Neither does his response to the AP story, which indicates
a casual disregard for the importance of accurate reporting of lawmakers’
financial affairs.
Mr. Torricelli, a Democrat who was one of the Senate’s most flamboyant
personalities and prodigious fund-raisers, abruptly quit the 2002 race amid
allegations of ethical misconduct and became a lobbyist. Since then,
he has given more than $40,000 to Nevada Democratic Party
organizations and candidates linked to the Senate majority leader, Harry
Reid.
